The CTI Program is a customized course based on the original course meant for concrete technologists in the USA and offered there for Level-II and III programs. While adapting the NRMCA Course in India, one of the major addition was essential that of including references to Indian Specifications and Standards alongside American ASTM or ACI specifications. This required painstakingly going through the entire course document of more than 400 pages and reading and modifying it for over 20 different topics. RMCMA performed this herculean task almost entirely on its own.
The details in 20 chapters have been edited to suit the requirements of ready mixed concrete industry professionals in India, particularly for those involved in designing, specifying, producing, handling and testing batch-plant concrete. The outcome is a customized program relevant to Indian conditions covering a range of topics from selecting raw materials for concrete, proportioning them for a particular duty and testing the resulting concrete to confirm its fresh and hardened properties.
To ensure focused learning, the number of seats in the CTI programs rarely exceeds 25. Course announcements are made well in advance so that working engineers can plan their professional commitments before taking part in the course. Participants with different profiles benefit from the program. These include technical and sales personnel from RMC plants, technical - support personnel from contractors/builders/project owners, technical-support personnel from structural consultants/architects, project management consultants. In terms of qualifications the participants need to have Degree/diploma in civil engineering. Science graduates with minimum experience of 3 years in RMC operations / concrete lab can also participate.
The four day CTI course is followed by an examination on the fifth day. The setting up of examination question paper and the evaluation of candidates are done by NRMCA. Successful participants receive a Certificate from NRMCA, a world renowned body. The sponsoring organizations can boast of having certified and trained concrete technologists.
The CTI Training course was organised by RMCMA has been successfully concluded. The CTI course on virtual mode was done first time and response had been very good. 48 candidates attended the program which is the highest number ever enrolled on this course.
The breakdown profile of candidates is given as under.
It will be seen that first time the candidates from RMCMA companies is 52%. The response from other than sector had been overwhelming.
The tenth batch of Concrete Technologist India Training (CTI) and Certification Course held during July 26-30/2018 in Mumbai attracted more participation than expected. As a result, the organisers had to look for a more spacious venue than the one originally selected offered. After considerable searches, and keeping in mind the requirement of providing a corporate environment for the training , the Acres Club was selected. The picture shows the 10th batch participants
A training program on RMC batching plant operations and maintenance was organised during July 17-21/2017 in Mumbai with faculty from Schiwng Stetter, Chennai. The program had 18 participants from leading RMC manufacturing companies in Mumbai. The five day training concluded with an assessment test conducted under an assessor deputed by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC)
The sixth Concrete Technologist India (CTI) Training and Certification began (June 24-28, 2016) with the participation of 22 candidates from various sectors of construction industry. This was a non-residential course, which meant that participants were not required to stay together at one place after the course hours.
Prior to reporting for the course at the Western Regional Instrumentation Centre (WRIC), Kalina Campus, University of Mumbai, Mumbai the participants had received the course material containing twenty topics. The study material was couriered to participants well in advance so that they get an opportunity to read through the chapters and familiarise themselves with the details of the topics to be covered during the lecture sessions.
The Faculty covered all the topics in details and included exercises using practical problems from RMC industry. The participants worked together after the class hours to solve such questions and additional questions included at the end of each chapter in the course material.
The lush green campus of the University of Mumbai provided the right atmosphere for meeting peers from RMC and other industry and learning together the various nuances of concrete technology. The 11 non-RMCMA member company participants matched in number with those from member companies. Relatively young participants worked with somewhat experienced ones and exchanged notes on concrete technology.
The course concluded with an open book examination containing about 80 questions. Most of the questions were objective types with some questions meant to test the concrete mix design knowledge of the participants. The group photographs shows the participants of this CTI program.
Trainee FeedbackWith the successful conclusion of Concrete Technologist India (CTI) program at Green Meadows, Chennai, the training efforts of the RMCMA crossed an important milestone by registering 131 participants in five programs held in different parts of the country and one program in Sri Lanka.
The Chennai program was originally planned for the first week of December 2015, but had to be postponed to Jan 20 -24, 2016 due to heavy rains.
Despite the city recovering from the heavy rains, the construction industry professionals did not want to give this training opportunity a miss. The fifteen participants showed enthusiasm during all the four days of the program, interacted well with the faculties and took their preparation for the certification examination seriously. RMC Readymix India (3), RDC Concrete (3), UltraTech (2), Trishul Concrete Products Ltd (1) participated by sending their engineers (figures in bracket). Other participants came from Shapoorji Pallonji & Co Pvt Ltd., Chemcon Tecsys, MCC (Chakan, Pune).
The CTI Chennai training sessions provided the participants an opportunity to revisit the topics learnt earlier, reinforce the know-how further, gain knowledge on newer techniques, and more importantly rejuvenate themselves to practice and spread better Concrete Technology.
For the fourth batch of Concrete Technologist India (CTi) Training and Certification program conducted during Jun 20-24, 2015 at L&T’s Leadership Development Centre, Lonavla , participants came from various parts of the country with a view to achieving their individual and company objectives. A young entrepreneur from Kanyakumari joined the course because he wanted to expand his existing precast blocks business by adding a ready mixed concrete unit to his exiting setup. The course gave him an opportunity to understand the various technical nuances of the RMC making.
On the other hand, the experienced participant from The Reliance Industries Limited, Jamanagar joined the CTi to refresh his knowledge by understanding the various changes in the IS specifications related to ready mixed concrete. The teams of engineers from UltraTech, ACC, RDC Concrete and RMC Readymix (India) engrossed themselves in comparing the various ASTM provisions with those of the IS codes and understanding the principles of concrete mix proportioning. Attending this batch of CTI were Engineers from Lafarge, Godrej and Skyway Concrete who enjoyed every bit of the discussions the faculty had with the participants.
Mr. Vijay Kulkarni (RMCMA), Mr. Anuj Maheshwari (Reliance Industries Ltd) and Mr. Sadanand Govilkar (RMC Readymix (India) ) acted as faculty. The senior and experienced engineer from JMC projects India represented an RMC user’s point of view. He appreciated the technical details covered in the twenty topics that form the CTI training and certification course. The four day residential program was concluded with a two hour examination on the fifth day. The participants enjoyed the scenic beauty of the Lonavla hills with the monsoon cloud making the picturesque place even more so.
Our next CTi training and certification schedule will be announced soon.
In a country like India, with a long history and practice in the use of labour-intensive site-mixed concrete, training and education in the sphere of ready-mixed concrete assumes importance. The ready-mixed concrete industry in India, which is still in its infancy, needs a large number of trained personnel for managing the production, delivery and placing of ready-mixed concrete. Many RMCMA member companies have developed in-house capabilities of training their own technician-level personnel. However, there are many technicians from non-member companies, who are in need of proper training.
Besides the technician-level personnel, technical training in concrete technology is equally important. It is being realized that although concrete is the fruit of simple technique, but it is a very complex science. Concrete technology is being taught in various engineering colleges and polytechnics all over India, yet ready-mixed concrete industry-centric training is not provided.
Considering the above, RMCMA decided to initially concentrate on training in concrete technology by entering into a MoU with the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA), USA, for offering training a unique certification course in India which is coined as “Concrete Technologists – India” (CTI).
As the competitive environment in the ready-mixed is growing, companies are realizing that the skills and knowledge of their employees would be critical for growth. RMCMA expects that the response to the CTI program will grow in future.
RMCMA plans to organize this flagship program at all the major concrete producing centers in India. If you wish to have the CTI program in your city or state, please get in touch with us.
