RMCMA has organised a Webinar on 29.04.2026 (Wednesday) from 03.00 pm to 05.00 pm on very important topic “100 years of Concrete”. The Webinar will be taken by Dr. Bishwajit Bhattacharjee.


 

Dr. Bishwajit Bhattacharjee is a retired Emeritus Professor from the Civil Engineering Department at IIT Delhi. He earned his B. Tech degree from IIT Kharagpur and M. Tech and PhD. degrees from IIT Delhi, with early industry experience at Gammon India Limited. A Fellow of the Indian Association of Structural Engineers, he has been actively involved with international academic institutions such as EPFL Switzerland, the University of Dundee, and other universities across Germany, Belgium, the UK, the US, and Ethiopia. He has consulted on over 250 national and international projects, including work for BHEL Sudan and the Archaeological Survey of India.


 

The Topic:

"100 years of Concrete" The relevance of last 100 years of concrete is explained first, elaborating initiation of concrete science. Incidentally first RCC structure in India is also nearly 100 years old. Cement based composite is age old, but modern cement-based composite is versatile. Evolution of concrete as a material both in terms of its material science and its technology over last 100 years are illustrated. Some innovations leading to great advancement in concrete technology during the century time is explained. A few Indian subcontinent specific issues are also flagged. Current and future challenges for concrete are highlighted and possible way forwards are discussed.
