Round Table Meeting on Quality Concrete:

About thirty top-ranking civil engineering professionals attended the first “Round-Table on QualityConcrete” held on October 20, 2014 in Bangalore. Representatives from leading consulting engineering organizations like Stup Consultants Pvt Ltd,. Chetana Engineering Services, Innotech Engineering Consult Pvt Ltd, Sterling Engineering Consultancy, Design Tree Service Consultants, TRC Engineering (I) Pvt Ltd, etc. attended the meeting. Representatives from government organizations such as Bangalore Development Authority, Karnataka Road Development Corporation Ltd, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd and Karnataka Public Works Department were also present in the meeting. RMCMA’s participation was through the representatives of its membercompanies.

Mr. M Ravishankar, President of RMCMA spoke about RMCMA’s efforts towards improving the quality of ready mixed concrete. He explained how RMCMA made a beginning with a self-regulatory Quality scheme and then moved to a third-party scheme under the control of Quality Council of India (QCI). He also highlighted RMCMA’s efforts in training and education through the “Concrete Technologist India” program.

Mr. R. D. Khatri, QCI Representative, National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies made a presentation of QCI certification scheme and explained the role of QCI. He explained the certification process and how the certifying bodies conduct the audits. He urged all the participants to recommend the use of ready-mixed concrete from QCI-certified plants. Following these presentations, there was detailed discussion on quality scheme. While an overwhelming majority of the participants welcomed the efforts of QCI and RMCMA in evolving the quality schemes, a number of queries were raised on specific aspects of the scheme. Representatives from QCI, RMCMA and Bureau Veritas replied to these queries satisfactorily. The participants’ queries made the round-table an interactive and lively event. Some participants agreed to specify the scheme in their specifications.
